The journey
The Hà Giang Loop is Vietnam's most dramatic road journey — a circuit through the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau Geopark, one of the few UNESCO Global Geoparks in Southeast Asia.
The route
Heaven's Gate viewpoint and the twin-mountain valley.
Pine roads and the Cán Tỷ pass — a half-day leg.
Old quarter, Lũng Cú flag tower and the Sunday market.
Mã Pí Lèng Pass above the Nho Quế river gorge.

Safety
Licence required
Vietnamese law requires an A1 licence or signed rental waiver for bikes over 50cc. Checkpoints do stop tourists.
Unguarded cliff roads
Mã Pí Lèng has almost no barriers. Fog, rain and fatigue are the main hazards — ride slowly and stop often.
Limited fuel stops
Carry a spare bottle on remote stretches; some villages only sell petrol in repurposed water bottles.

Culture
Markets rotate by day — Đồng Văn on Sundays draws hundreds of villagers on foot and horseback. Go for the atmosphere, not just the Instagram shot.
Editor's call
The best way to experience the market is to arrive at dawn, before the tour groups.
