Dien Hue Nam Festival (Thua Thien - Hue) is a beautiful practice of the Vietnamese people's belief in worshiping the Mother Goddesses of the Three Realms, an Intangible Cultural Heritage recognized by UNESCO.
On the morning of August 5 (the 8th day of the 7th lunar month), the Department of Culture and Sports of Thua Thien-Hue province coordinated with the Hue Festival Center and the Hue Nam Temple Sponsorship Board to organize the Hue Nam Temple Festival. This is a beautiful practice of the Vietnamese people's worship of the Mother Goddesses of the Three Realms, an intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO.
From early morning, many pilgrims and people were present at Thien Tien Thanh Giao Sanctuary (Chi Lang Street, Hue City) to participate in the rituals of Dien Hue Nam Festival. One of the most special features of the Festival is the procession of the Holy Mother by boat on the Perfume River.
More than 70 flags and chau an (single and double Dragon boats) carry the Holy Mother and the Council of Four Palaces along the Perfume River, upstream to Hue Nam Palace. Inside the boats are placed the Holy Mother's palanquin and the royal decree box, along with worship objects such as umbrellas, canopies, flags, and fans. The procession of hundreds of people recreates the unique traditional cultural beliefs, displaying a variety of colorful ancient costumes combined with performances and dances typical of the Mother Goddess worship.
The Hue Nam Temple Festival also has other unique activities such as the Main Ceremony, praying for national peace and prosperity, the Cao Nieu Ceremony and the Hoan Ta Ceremony. In addition to the main ceremonies, pilgrims can also participate in festival activities on the Bang An (double Dragon boats)... with unique Hue Chau Van melodies.
The colorful and vibrant activities attracted tens of thousands of people from provinces across the country to the festival. This is considered a folk and community cultural festival typical of the ancient capital of Hue. Participating in the Dien Hue Nam Festival, Ms. Mai Thi Phan (Quang Nam province) said that she is a follower of Mother Goddess Worship.
Every year, she comes to Hue early and participates in the procession of the Holy Mother to Hue Nam Temple. This time, she lit incense and candles to the Holy Mother to pray for peace and health for her family. The festival lasts until August 7 (July 10 of the lunar calendar). Usually held in March and July of the lunar calendar every year, this traditional festival is associated with the spiritual and cultural elements of worshiping the Holy Mother Thien YA Na.
