Who is worshiped at Hung Yen Mau Temple?
The Hung Yen Mau Temple worships Duong Quy Phi, who was praised as Duong Thien Hau. According to historical records and the Jade Genealogy, she was the wife of King Tong De Binh. In 1279, the Yuan army invaded the Song Dynasty, the king and the royal family boarded a boat and fled to the South. On the way, they were captured by the Yuan general Truong Hoang Pham. The Song Dynasty king and some concubines refused to submit and jumped into the sea to commit suicide. Duong Quy Phi's body drifted to the sandbank, where people buried her properly and built a temple to worship her.
History of Hung Yen Mother Temple
According to “Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi”, Mau Temple was built during the reign of Tran Nhan Tong, in the first year of Thieu Bao (1279). Through the dynasties, the Temple was restored and awarded many times. In the 8th year of Thanh Thai (1896), the Temple was extensively restored and has the architectural scale as it is today. In 1990, Mau Temple Hung Yen was ranked as an architectural and artistic relic.
Architecture of Hung Yen Temple
The temple was built on the land of "Ngoa Long" overlooking the Crescent Lake with a spacious space, creating the "Son Dieu Thuy" position. The Nghi Mon Gate of the Hung Yen Mother Temple is quite imposing, with a two-story, eight-roofed overlapping architecture, with curved edges. The door is built with an arch, with one main door and two side doors, the two pillars on top have two crocodiles facing the door. On the arch is a large plaque inscribed in Seal script "Duong Thien Hau - Tong Trieu" and a Chinese plaque "Thien Ha Mau Nghi". Through the Nghi Mon Gate is the temple yard, in the middle of the yard is an ancient tree with an age of more than 700 years, a combination of 3 banyan, banyan, and si trees firmly intertwined, casting dense shade around the Hung Yen Mother Temple, adding to the solemnity and tranquility. This is one of the oldest ancient trees in the North. The main worship hall of the Hung Yen Mother Temple consists of 3 compartments, with an architecture in the style of eight roofs covered with dragon scale tiles, the roof edges are curved like dragons facing each other. The beams, lotus columns, pillars are carved with leaves, flowers, dragons, phoenixes, and the traps are carved with dragon heads. On both sides of the main worshiping hall are the Liu Ly Palace and the Quang Han Palace. The Front Hall also consists of 3 rooms, built in the style of overlapping beams and lotus columns, splendid with horizontal lacquered boards, parallel sentences, sacrificial objects, umbrellas, flags, robes, weapon holders, palanquins, and dragon pavilions all painted in brilliant red and gilded gold. The roof is decorated with the image of "Two dragons facing the moon", dragon blades facing the moon, and dancing phoenixes. The rear palace consists of 5 rooms, built in the style of overlapping beams and two secondary pillars with 12 main pillars, 6 secondary pillars, the beams are carved with soft flowers and leaves, and the door panel is carved with apricot and chrysanthemum. Inside is a statue of Yang Guifei with a kind face, along with 2 servants, Kim Thi and Lieu Thi, dating from the 17th-18th century. In addition, Hung Yen Mau Temple also preserves many precious relics such as dragon beds and dragon steles dating from the 18th and 19th centuries and 15 royal decrees from the Le to Nguyen dynasties, praising the loyal example of Duong Quy Phi.
Hung Yen Temple Festival
Every year, the Mau Temple Festival in Hung Yen is held from the 20th to the 22nd of the first lunar month, attracting a large number of local people and tourists from all over to attend, worship, and pray for good things and happiness. The ceremony is solemn. The festival includes folk games and Chau Van singing. - In particular, during the festival, there will be 2 exciting palanquin processions. The sickle procession from Dinh Hien to the Hung Yen Mau Temple, led by flags, drums, gongs, dragon palanquins, eight treasures, and a procession with a lion and dragon dance team.
