My Lung Commune, Yen Lap District, Phu Tho Province, is famous for its Ga Gay sticky rice, a traditional product of the Muong ethnic group. Ga Gay My Lung sticky rice is a long-term sticky rice variety, grown from May to October. The rice grains of this variety are large, plump, white, and have a special aroma. Ga Gay sticky rice only develops its characteristic flavor when grown in My Lung Commune.
How to cook sticky rice from Ga Gay sticky rice is very simple. Normally, sticky rice from this type of rice is often made into white sticky rice, without using colored leaves. Just measure clean rice into the sticky rice steamer, then cook it. The sticky rice has a characteristic aroma, is soft and not sticky to the hands. When eating, people often dip it with sesame salt to enhance the flavor. Muong people often wrap sticky rice in dong leaves, not only to preserve it but also to create a beautiful appearance and a pleasant aroma. Sticky rice can be preserved for quite a long time, from the previous day to the next day, still retaining its softness and deliciousness.
According to the tradition of the Muong ethnic group in My Lung commune, Yen Lap district, Phu Tho province, the story surrounding the cooking of Ga Gay sticky rice has a magical story. The story was told long ago about a young couple in love. Before getting married, the two families held a wedding according to the traditional customs of the Muong ethnic group. Before the girl left her husband's house, her mother gave her a bag of rice, assigning her the task of bringing it to her husband's house as a way to protect herself. Although the family was not rich, the girl did not have high expectations.
However, a few days after the wedding, when her mother-in-law invited the head of the family to dinner, the girl forgot her mother’s instructions and did not pound the rice. At night, when she heard the rooster crow, the girl remembered to pound the rice and soak it to cook sticky rice. Even though the soaking time was not enough, she still cooked the sticky rice and the result was a delicious, soft meal. When her mother-in-law asked what kind of rice the sticky rice was made from, the girl said it was Ga Gay sticky rice.
This story has become a tradition, helping Ga Gay sticky rice become famous and known to everyone. In a large project to build and develop Vietnamese culinary culture into a national brand, Ga Gay My Lung sticky rice was chosen as one of three special culinary dishes of Phu Tho province. This is part of honoring and preserving Vietnam's culinary cultural heritage, aiming to make Vietnamese culinary culture an indispensable part of the global culinary world.
