Ta Kou Nature Reserve is located in Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam. It is one of 221 important ecological regions in the world in urgent need of conservation1. The reserve includes Ta Kou Mountain, 697 meters high and 1,104 hectares wide, along with a coastal area of 10,762 hectares, mainly coastal sandy soil.
1. Ta Kou Nature Reserve is home to a variety of diverse and rare animals such as:
Pig-tailed macaques and gray langurs: These are monkey species that live in Ta Kou forest. Pig-tailed macaques have long tails and usually live in the tree layer, while gray langurs prefer to live in the ground layer.
Civets, weasels and squirrels: These animals also live in the closed forest area of Ta Kou.
Rock lizard and Cyrtodactylus takouensis: Two species of lizards were recorded at Ta Kou. The rock lizard (Gekko takouensis sp. Nov.) and the Cyrtodactylus takouensis are both rare species.
Red-crowned pheasant, purple-sided pheasant, crested pheasant, partridge, mountain kite: These are some of the globally endangered species.
Truong Son Silvered Langur and Black-shanked Douc: These two langur species also live in the Ta Kou area.
In addition, the reserve also has a rich flora with about 1,200 species of higher plants, including many precious natural medicinal plants such as yam (also known as hoai son or son duoc). Yam is used as medicine, and the harvest time is usually from October to March of the following year, when the yam is of the best quality. Although small, the yam in the Ta Kou forest area is delicious and has high medicinal properties, so it is sought after by people and sold on the market.
